Every GBFS value in an Alchemy import plays an important role in one or more GeoBase functions.

Tip Tip

This topic outlines the effect that each value (populated by an IMPORT STREETS statement) has on particular services that GeoBase offers.

Caution note Caution

Improper use or omission of data values may cause functions to behave in an illegal or dangerous manner.

AR Flags

AR flags are boolean values used to determine whether certain vehicle types are allowed on a link. If FALSE the routing engine will only route a restricted vehicle type along a link if there is no viable alternative.

Usage

AR flags affect Routing and Navigation functionality, and are used in conjunction with FUNC_CLASS, ROUTE_TYPE and SPEED_CAT values to determine the ROAD_TYPE value for the link. The ROAD_TYPE value determines how the link should be drawn on a map.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate:

  • the routing engine may generate illegal routes
  • the routing engine may be unable to generate quality routes
  • the ROAD_TYPE of a link may be incorrectly identified
  • maps may display/color roads misleadingly

Notes

The vehicle type may be set using the VehicleType of a Route, or by applying a VehicleSpec.VehicleType. See IMPORT STREETS - ROAD_TYPE to learn how the AR flags are used to determine the ROAD_TYPE.

BASENAME

The basename is the primary string component of a link name: "Maple" in "Maple Avenue", "San Diego" in "San Diego Freeway".

Usage

The basename is used to identify the link. It is required in order to provide both forward and reverse GeoCoding (GeoCoding Concept) services.

When using Navigation services, the basename is required to display the name of the link in instructions.

Performance

If this value is missing:

  • GeoCoding services will fail
  • Navigation services may still function, but usability will be severely inhibited
BRIDGE

A boolean value that is used to indicate whether this link is a bridge, or overbridge.

Usage

This value is used by Navigation services to provide precise directions when an intersection includes one or more overbridges.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate then misleading or false driving instructions may be generated.

CONTRACC

A boolean value that indicates whether this link is subject to controlled access. A controlled access link is a high speed, high volume road with limited entrances and exits.

Usage

Navigation services use this value to determine the limits of the freeway when generating directions.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate then misleading or false driving instructions may be generated.

DIR_TRAVEL

A character value that indicates allowed directions of travel on a link. The permitted directions of travel may be one of: not applicable (space), both directions allowed (B), travel from reference end allowed (F), travel to reference end allowed (T).

Usage

This value is used by Navigation services to determine the nature of an intersection and thus provide accurate and relevant directions. Routing services use this value to prevent certain driving maneuvers, or to determine which links may be used in a route.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate:

  • Routing services may return an illegal or dangerous route
  • the routing engine may not be able to identify the 'optimum' route
  • Navigation services may provide misleading or false directions
DIRONSIGN

A character representing the 'official' direction of travel, as written on a highway sign. This value would be 'E' for the highway sign "Eastbound Freeway".

DIVIDER

A character value that indicates the presence and nature of a traffic-blocking divider. This divider could be either physical (such as a concrete barrier/grass median strip) or legal (such as painted lines).

Usage

Routing and Navigation services use this value to determine the legality of a driving maneuver.

Performance

If this value is missing an illegal, physically impossible, or dangerous driving maneuver could be instructed.

DIVIDERLEG

A boolean value indicating that a DIVIDER is legal, as opposed to physical.

EXITNUMBER

A boolean value used to determine whether the name of this link is the exit number for a freeway.

FERRY_TYPE

A character value indicating the type of a ferry: land, sea or rail.

Usage

This value is used by Navigation services to generate accurate embark/disembark instructions.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate then driving directions will not include accurate 'disembark' or 'change ferry' instructions.

FRONTAGE

A boolean value indicating whether this is a frontage or service road, allowing access to businesses and residences along a main road.

FULL_GEOM

A boolean value indicating that all parts of this intersection have been mapped.

ID

An integer value (no greater than 64-bits in length) unique to this link.

Usage

This value is used by all GeoBase services.

Performance

This value must be present or GeoBase will not function.

INDESCRIB

A boolean value indicating whether this link is indescribable. Examples of indescribable links include: turning lanes, traffic islands, u-turn lanes and on-ramps.

INPROCDATA

A boolean value indicating that some data for this intersection may be missing or inaccurate.

INTERINTER

A boolean value. If TRUE, this link exists to maintain the navigational structure of an intersection and may not be physically present.

Usage

This value is used by Navigation services to provide accurate directions when navigating intersections.

Routing services use this value to correctly identify intersections.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate:

  • misleading or false driving instructions may be generated
  • the routing engine may be unable to generate quality routes
  • Routing services may not return accurate time/distance calculations
ISMAJOR

A boolean value indicating that this is a major highway - such as those used to link states or countries.

JUNCTIONNM

A boolean value indicating that the name of this link also applies to all other all named exits, entries and ramp systems for this junction.

L_REGION n

A string value naming the n-tier region to the left of the link.

Usage

This value is used by GeoCoder services.

Peformance

If this value is missing GeoCoding will fail, or be severely inhibited.

LADDRSCH

A character value indicating the address scheme on the left (relative to the reference end) of the street.

Usage

This value is used by GeoCoder services.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate GeoCoder precision will be impaired.

LANE_CAT

An integer used to identify a road by the number of lanes in each direction.

Usage

This value is used by Mapping services to display roads correctly.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate maps may display/color roads misleadingly.

LANG

A three-character language code representing the language used for this road name. Appropriate values conform to ISO 693-2 (alpha-3).

LNREFADDR

The address or house number on the left side of the link at the non-reference end.

Usage

This value is used by GeoCoder services.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate GeoCoder precision will be impaired.

LPOSTCODE

The post code on the left (relative to the reference end) of the street.

Usage

This value is used by GeoCoder services.

Performance

If this value is missing GeoCoder precision will be severely inhibited.

LREFADDR

The address or house number on the left side of the link at the reference end.

Usage

This value is used by GeoCoder services.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate GeoCoder precision will be impaired.

MANEUVER

A boolean value indicating a group of one or more links that only require one maneuver for the purposes of explication.

Usage

This value is used when determining how the streets should be drawn on a map.

Reverse GeoCoding services use this value to determine the address of a point.

Navigation services use this value to create accurate driving directions.

Routing services use this value to correctly determine the nature and legality of a turn.

Performance

If this value is missing or incorrect:

  • an intersection may be incorrectly identified
  • Reverse GeoCoding precision may be impaired
  • driving directions may include extraneous or inaccurate information

If a RAMP value is also missing (or incorrectly set) for this link an illegal or dangerous turn could be made (on a freeway ramp).

MAXATTR

A boolean value indicating whether this link is part of a detailed coverage area

MULTIDIGIT

A boolean value indicating one traffic direction per link, rather than one road per link.

Usage

This value is used to determine how an intersection is drawn on a map.

Navigation services use this value to correctly determine the nature of an intersection.

Performance

If this value is missing an intersection might be drawn incorrectly or misleading directions could be given.

Notes

This is often used by data providers to aid in the digitization of complex intersections.

NAMEONRDSN

A boolean value indicating that this is the official name of the road - which is normally the one printed on the road sign.

NAME

A string value representing the full name of this street. It will include any prefixes, suffixes and types.

Usage

This value is used by GeoCoding services to correctly identify a street.

When drawing a map this name is used as the display name of the street.

Performance

If this value is missing or incorrect:

  • misleading information may be shown on a map
  • GeoCoder precision may be severely inhibited
NM_PREF

A string value representing the prefix type of the street embedded within NAME.

Usage

GeoCoding services rely on this value.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate GeoCoding services may fail or be severely inhibited.

Differences between NM_PREF/NM_SUFF and TYP_BEF/TYP_AFT

NM_PREF and NM_SUFF are the street name's prefix and suffix, respectively. Usually, the prefix and suffix are used to indicate directions, such as 'E' for East, 'W' for West, and so on; and they are often empty.

TYP_BEF and TYP_AFT refer to the street type (for example street or road) - usually there will be either a TYP_BEF or a TYP_AFT, but not both. The use of one or the other is normally dependent on country / language. In places like France and Italy, for example, they usually have TYP_BEFs, (Avenue Eiffel, Rue Fabre) and in English-speaking countries they usually have TYP_AFTs, (London St, Winchester Ave), but in some countries like Switzerland where several languages are used some streets will have TYP_BEF and others will have TYP_AFT.

Some examples:

15 E Maple St - E is NM_PREF, St is TYP_AFT

15 Maple St E - St is TYP_AFT, E is NM_SUFF

15 Via Italia - Via is TYP_BEF

NM_SUFF

A string value representing the suffix type of the street embedded within NAME, such as weg in Bichlweg.

Usage

GeoCoding services rely on this value.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate GeoCoding services may fail or be severely inhibited.

PAVED

A boolean value indicating whether this road is paved/sealed.

Usage

This value is used by Routing services.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate the routing engine may not be able to correctly identify the optimum route.

POIACCESS

A boolean value used to indicate the links between a POI and a road network.

POSTALNAME

A boolean value indicating an auxiliary link name, often supplied by postal service files.

Usage

This value is used by Forward GeoCoding services.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate then Forward GeoCoder precision will be impaired.

PRIVATE

A boolean value indicating that this link is 'private', that is, public access may be restricted.

Usage

Routing services will try to avoid generating routes along private roads

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate the routing engine may generate a route that cannot be traveled (for example, due to a locked gate).

R_REGION n

A string value naming the n-tier region to the left of the link.

Usage

This value is used by GeoCoder services.

Performance

If this value is missing GeoCoding will fail, or be severely inhibited.

RADDRSCH

A character value indicating the address scheme on the left (relative to the reference end) of the street.

Usage

This value is used by GeoCoder services.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate GeoCoder precision will be impaired.

RAMP

A boolean value used to identify a link that connects two roads which would otherwise not intersect. Ramps also connect controlled access roads to uncontrolled access roads.

Usage

Navigation services use this value to create accurate driving directions.

Routing services use this value to correctly determine the nature and legality of a turn.

Performance

If this value is missing or incorrect:

  • an intersection may be incorrectly identified
  • driving directions may include extraneous or inaccurate information

If a MANEUVER value is also missing (or incorrectly set) for this link it is possible that an illegal or dangerous turn could be made.

RNREFADDR

The address or house number on the left side of the link at the non-reference end.

Usage

This value is used by GeoCoder services.

Performance

If this value is missing GeoCoder precision will be reduced.

FUNC_CLASS

An integer value indicating the volume and speeds that a road can sustain: 1 - highways and main routes, 5 - low-speed, low-volume intra-neighborhood roads. FUNC_CLASS is used in conjunction with ROUTE_TYPE, SPEED_CAT and certain AR_ values to determine the ROAD_TYPE value for the link. The ROAD_TYPE value determines how the link should be drawn on a map.

Usage

Mapping services use this value to determine how this link should be drawn on a map.

The value of ROAD_TYPE affects the behavior of Navigation and Routing services.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate:

  • maps may display/color roads misleadingly
  • the routing engine will generate inaccurate routes

ROUNDABOUT

A boolean value indicating whether this link is part of a roundabout.

Usage

Reverse geocoding services use this value to correctly identify an address.

This value is used to display a roundabout on a map.

Navigation services use this value to correctly identify roundabouts and draw TurnBox objects.

Routing services use this value to correctly identify optimum routes.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate:

  • the precision of reverse GeoCodes may be inhibited
  • roundabouts may not be drawn (correctly) on a map
  • TurnBox objects may display misleading or false information
  • Routing services may not correctly identify 'optimum' route(s)
  • Navigation services may provide misleading or false directions
ROUTE_TYPE

An integer value indicating that this link is part of a larger route, where often the route number and road name are the same. ROUTE_TYPE is used in conjunction with FUNC_CLASS, SPEED_CAT and certain AR_ values to determine the ROAD_TYPE value for the link. The ROAD_TYPE value determines how the link should be drawn on a map.

Usage

This value is used by Routing and Navigation services to generate accurate driving directions and routes.

Mapping services use this value to determine how this link should be drawn on a map.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate:

  • the routing engine may generate inaccurate routes
  • maps may display/color roads misleadingly
  • Navigation Services may return misleading or false driving directions

RPOSTCODE

The post code on the left (relative to the reference end) of the street.

Usage

This value is used by GeoCoder services.

Performance

If this value is missing the GeoCoder precision will be severely inhibited.

RREFADDR

The address or house number on the left side of the link at the reference end.

Usage

This value is used by GeoCoder services.

Performance

If this value is missing GeoCoder precision will be reduced.

SPECTRFIG

A boolean value indicating that this is an intersection similar to a roundabout, but with either more than one direction of travel around it or a road crossing through it.

SPEED_CAT

An integer value representing the speed 'trend' of a road, which is determined by several factors including the legal speed limit and any access restrictions to the road. SPEED_CAT is used in conjunction with FUNC_CLASS, ROUTE_TYPE and certain AR_ values to determine the ROAD_TYPE value for the link. The ROAD_TYPE value determines how the link should be drawn on a map.

Usage

Routing services use this value to provide accurate route timing information.

Mapping services use this value to determine how this link should be drawn on a map.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate:

  • maps may display/color roads misleadingly
  • the routing engine may generate inaccurate routes
  • calculations made by the routing engine may be inaccurate

SPEED_LIM

An integer value representing the legal speed limit for a road.

Usage

This value is used by Routing and Navigation services to determine the 'optimum' route.

Performance

This value may assist in the correct determination of 'optimum' routes.

While there will be no noticeable performance issues, it is recommended that this value be imported.

STALENAME

A boolean value indicating a name that is still used colloquially, but is no longer officially recognized.

TOLLWAY

A boolean value used to indicate a link that requires a fee to be paid when traveled upon.

Usage

Routing and Navigation services will use this value when instructed to not route along tollways.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate the routing engine will be unable to distinguish between tollways and non-tollways.

Notes

The behavior of UseTollRoads relies on the population of the TOLLWAY value.

TUNNEL

A boolean value used to indicate if this link is part of a tunnel.

Usage

Mapping services use this value to determine whether a road should be displayed as a tunnel.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate maps will not correctly display tunnels.

TYP_AFT

A string representing the suffix street type (such as 'Street' in 'Murray Street'). Not to be confused with NM_SUFF.

Usage

GeoCoding services rely on this value.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate GeoCoding services may fail or be severely inhibited.

UNDEFTRAFF

A boolean value used to indicate links in paved areas without legally defined traffic paths that may still be navigable to cars - such as a carpark.

URBAN

A boolean value used to indicate links in urban (built-up) areas.

ZLEVEL

A signed integer representing the relative vertical position of a point or link.

Usage

This value is used by Mapping services to correctly display roads.

Routing and Navigation services rely on z-levels for feature identification and to identify allowable turns.

Performance

If this value is missing or inaccurate:

  • incorrect routes may be generated
  • roads may be incorrectly shown on a map
